Let learn some clinical signs¹:
1.Babinski sign: I think you are well acquainted with this sign.Here when we strike lateral aspect of sole results in dorsiflexion flexion of great toe( plantar response extensosr)
2.Battle's sign: Bruising over mastoid which indicates fractured base of the skull.
3.Beever's sign: Excessive displacement of the I'm elicus on attempting sit up.May be due to weakness of of abdominal musculature such in muscular dystrophy
4.Chvostek Sign: Tapping over the skin of facial nerve(just infront the tragus) causes muscle twitching.It may be found in tetany,anxiety.
5.Forment sign: Flexion of the thumb on attempting to hold a sheet of paper between index finger and thumb.It may be due to weakness of adductor pollicis.
6.Gowers' manoeuvre: Inability to stand from sitting without using arms.
7.Hoover's test: Manoeuvre that may distinguish organic from historical hemiplegia.
Here when assessing hip flexion on one side ,test for counterextension on the contralateral side.If this(counterextension) absent this indicates inadequate effort to the normal side and due to conversion disorder.
8. Jendrassik Manoeuvre: Reinforcement of deep tendon reflex(You can not comment that deep tend reflex such as knee jerk is absent without doing the manoeuvre.)
9.Kernig's sign: Flexion of the thigh and extension on the knee cause pain/spasm in the hamstring caused in meningeal irritation.
10.Lasegue's sign:Pain and spasm induced by straight leg raising.
11.Lthermitte's sign: Flexion of the neck causing electric shock like sensation found in cervical myelopathy.
12.Monize sign: Forced plantar flexion the ankle leading to extension of the toes.
13.Oppenheim's sign/reflex: Stroking medial side of the tibia leading to extension of great toe.
14.Romberg's Sign: Patient can not remain standing in eye closure.Seen in vestibular disease and sensory ataxia.
15.Stellwag sign: Infrequent blinking in Parkinson's Disease.
16.Tinel's sign: Tapping over carpal tunnel (anterior aspect of wrist) causes tingling over median nerve distribution.
